"The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates there are
more than 107,000 homeless veterans. According to the National Coalition for
Homeless Veterans five percent of homeless veterans are women." says TaRhonda
Thomas in a 9News article.
The Volunteers of America, who run shelters for the homeless,
have teamed up with HomeAid Colorado
to provide transitional housing, specifically for female veterans.
"This is one of the first in the state of Colorado to provide transitional housing for female
veterans," said HomeAid Colorado Executive Director Laura Brayman as she stood in front of a
two-story four-bedroom home being built in Denver." The veterans will live in the home
for six months to a year while they save enough money to move to their own
place.
HomeAid Colorado
has built 40 units since it began in 1999.
Most contractors provide free services and 69% of the labor and items
used are donations. Volunteers of America cover
any remaining expenses with federal grant money. They plan to build two more transitional
homes for female veterans by 2012.
For the female veterans, this will be a new beginning to
work for a better future.
