We were taught since we were kids to look both ways before crossing the street, and to be careful when using tools or knives, but what about safety when were adults? What about safety for realtors, they can end up in all sorts of compromising situations. Do realtors think about their surroundings and who is in their surroundings with them? As with many 14 year olds we all say, "I can take care of myself." Yes, that may be true, but is it true all the time? Do you really think you can defend yourself against someone who is committed to an act of violence?

It has been written about in the past, and the topic comes up from time to time, and maybe more should be published about it. Well, the topic just came up again due to the killing of a realtor who was showing a vacant home in Youngstown. Nobody wants to be an alarmist or walk around panic stricken, and thats not the point of articles such as this one. The idea is to be mindful of your surroundings and prevent this from happening again.

There are a host of simple things you can do to keep yourself and your staff safe in these cases. Do a little research, consult with a security expert, have them come and talk to your staff. Even if you dont want to go to such measures, you should always make sure other people either are with you or others know your whereabouts. Make sure you have the ID of the people you are showing a property to, especially if its off the beaten path. Dont put yourself in a risky situation; a commission is not worth your security.
