The US Census Bureau released new data that shows that
there were approximately 13,700 housing
units started in the West Census region of the US in June 2011. National levels were up 16 percent, with total
housing starts rising to a total of 62,900.
June 2011 produced the largest number
of housing starts since October 2008.
"Multifamily starts have rebounded more than
single-family starts." reported Ryan McMaken of the Colorado Division of
Housing. "Starts for structures with
more than one unit, increased by 242 percent rising from 1,400 units during
June 2010, to 4,800 units during June (2011).
The data clearly shows strength in the demand for rental-housing.
"This data
suggests that multifamily starts have
established a clear growth trend over the past several months," writes
McMaken, "and given the demand for rental housing as an alternative to home
ownership, this trend is poised to continue."
