Navigating social media and networking

Mark Eibner interviews 2010 Annual Meeting sponsor Brad Hanks, whose Brad Hanks Seminars helps real estate professionals navigate the waters of social media and social networking.

Mark Eibner: Hi, I'm Mark Eibner with Metro Brokers TV, and we're here today with Brad Hanks from Brad Hanks Seminars. Brad just got off giving a social media seminar for our members here. Welcome to the show, Brad.

Brad Hanks: Well thanks, Mark, glad to be here.

Interviewer: So what kind of attendance did you have today in the show?

Brad Hanks: Standing room only. Yeah, I was surprised. It was really packed. It was great.

Interviewer: Do you think we should have sold tickets then?

Brad Hanks: Yeah we should've.

Interviewer: Yeah we probably have to, to pay for you, so...

Brad Hanks: Just feed me, I'm good.

Interviewer: Just feed you. So what time, what kind of topics did you discuss with the members? I mean, what seemed to garner the most interest from them?

Brad Hanks: Well, we started with a basic overview of social media in general, and kind of went out down to social networking and specific, and then the platforms of Facebook and LinkedIn. You know me, I can suck the air out of the room for four hours beginning with that amount of time, but we had a limited amount of time, so we really had to cover a lot of ground just in those two platforms in a very limited space.

Interviewer: So were a lot of people glossing over? Do you think there is a lot of new people in their experience? Where do you think social media is in the Metro Brokers network?

Brad Hanks: Well, it seemed to me it was a good mix of experience out there. We have some people that are, you know, really well-prepared and adapted to using social media and social networking. They've been using it for, you know, several months, if not years, and then there are others that quite frankly hadnt really explored that just here, so I would say in general thats a good medium range mix of experience.

Interviewer: Well, this was a good test. I have been trying to get Metro Brokers actually to do kind of a whole-day seminar for people prior to this venue and then have the venue at night later, and I think next year we will try to get you to just speak here again.

Brad Hanks: That will be great, I'd love to. I mentioned to the group in the social media boot camps that I do, which are hands-on, focused programs three hours in length, and those seem to get people up to speed very quickly, even if you're starting from, you know, zero. By the end of three hours you will know how to navigate your Facebook, you'll know how to create a profile on LinkedIn, and you'll know about Twitter. I offer those out there and hopefully we will see some folks coming to those in future.

Interviewer: Great, well, appreciate you being here today, Brad, thank you.

Brad Hanks: Thanks, Mark.

Interviewer: You bet.
