For a house to truly be a home, it has to be comforting and relaxing. Here are some tips to make it healthy and efficient.
- Choosing furniture: it's important to choose attractive and comfortable furniture and it's even more important to know how it was made. Pressed woods are known to have urea-formaldehyde residue, which is toxic and can slowly emit these toxins in your home.
- The right paint: Paint can also emit toxins into your home, so choose low- or no-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint, and only buy what you need.
- Household cleaners: Opt for plant-based cleaners. If there is a warning label, look for less-toxic competitors.
- Energy consumption: Caulk window and door cracks to make a comfortable temperature without higher, less-efficient energy bills, and cover gaps with adequate insulation. Also install a programmable thermostat to make your energy use as efficient as possible.
- Lighting: You can save up to 75% less energy on lighting alone by replacing traditional incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents, and there are many different types available on the market.
- Appliances: HVAC filters should be replaced regularly. Consider upgrading to more efficient appliances as there have been many improvements on the latest appliance designs.
