Do you Know the QR Code?

You've seen them...the square, black and white codes that are popping up in advertising everywhere.  And, if you have a smart phone, you've probably tried the new technology.

QR Code exampleQR stands for Quick Response and it's "the latest trend in mobile technology that allows smartphone users to quickly access videos, coupons, maps and other information by scanning the images with their phone's cameras." writes Andy Vuong for The Denver Post.

These codes can do anything from offering free stuff to  sending users "a virtual business card, a text message or a link to a website, digital coupon or online video." says Vuong.  "QR codes on Best Buy store shelves are linked to customer reviews and video demos of products."

All you need to access the information embedded in the QR codes, is a smartphone with a camera, Internet access and a QR code reader app, most of which are free to download from an app store.

You can even add a QR to your business card that allows Android and iPhone users the capability of adding your contact information directly into your smartphone.

Colorado based "MYAPPTOGO.com" offers a mobile web/app service for your business.  For an initial set-up fee and low monthly payments,  they will help you create your own iPhone app and mobile-enabled website with accessability to all types of smartphones, as well as desktops, laptops, netbooks, and tablets like the iPad, says the website.

This service includes unlimited text messaging, tech support and a QR Code for your website for consumers to be directed to you.  "If you can add content, upload images add social links and email your customers, then you can manage your own mobile web/app." writes a user of the service.

"With smartphone use proliferating - comScore estimates there are nearly 70 million smartphone owners in the U.S. - the staying power of QR codes will depend on the information they contain." says Vuong.

"The codes need to unlock relevant information and tools in order to justify the hassle of scanning them."  said Neil Goyal, chief executive of BWScan, which offers a free QR code generator.

Vuong reports that 1stBank conducted a six-month campaign at DIA that featured billboards with QR codes linking to free books and Sudoku puzzles. "The codes were scanned more than 25,000 times over the course of the campaign, which ended last month," said Matt Best from the ad agency who developed the ads.
